Blackalope. There are some things you can't say. But you say them anyways. There are some things you can't think. But that doesn't stop you. There are some thing you want to vanish. But they're here forever. Blackalope. This is a book of poetry. This is a book of dark and painful words. This is a book about Blackalopes. Whatever they are supposed to be. The third book of poetry by James Wylder ("Cascade"). You can read it. Maybe.

Quote:

"Horns in its heads
chimerable suffering
leaping along the grass
to quiver and shiver its nose
at the dawning sun
that causes men to scream
into the horizon
burning the world with our eyes
gouged by lightswitches"

I was put off immediately upon starting this book. The author falls one step short of calling you an idiot for buying it (I got it at no cost using Kindle Unlimited and I still feel humbled).

The collection closes by informing the reader that he has better books available (hopefully all of them are better) and then nonchalantly and somewhat cynically stating that you can either read them or not.

My apologies for being so rough Mr. Wylder; I understand how difficult the path of a writer can be. I'm going to have to decline on any further reads.

Blackalope James R Wylder Emily Hempstead 9781500507657 Books Reviews

The poems are great. Definitely meant a lot to me as I read it. This sort of thing isn't easy to read sometimes, but I found it comforting.
Truly a piece to take your time with to appreciate what is being said. A collection to help you through darker days when you are feeling alone in your experiences.
I don’t normally read books of poetry, and this one has me intrigued. In Blackalope, author James Wylder - self-proclaimed loser per his moniker topping every even-numbered page - takes the reader on a dreamlike journey that oscillates between cryptic and stunningly blatant. He writes of sex and longing, of the all-too-real pain of loneliness and emptiness and abuse and disillusionment. This is certainly not a book for everybody, but if you have ever felt like a misfit, or damaged, or are simply brave enough to stare into the abyss, you will find writings in this book that speak to you. Mr. Wylder, Sir, you are no loser. Your courage in sharing your vulnerabilities makes for fertile soil for a future of empathy and healing. The raw emotional grit you show the reader fails to conceal that underneath that heavy antlered crown, there is a loving human being who each day can learn to see the joy that contrasts with the darkness.
